President's Report

March 2006

Report to the 4CS Board following the spring 2006 Executive Board meeting at Grossmont College March 10 and 11, 2006.

The board did a lot of great work over the two days and despite the atypical San Diego weather managed to have a little bit of fun as well. We missed all of you who were unable to join us and we welcomed a new board member, Denise Albright from Pasadena City College as our new Southwest 3 representative.

We were honored with a guest for most of Friday’s meeting. Rocky Rose from Grossmont College serves on the CSEA Community College Committee and has significant senate and governance experience at his college. His contributions to our discussions were valued and I thank him for trying to facilitate the building of a relationship between our two organizations.

We also met with the Grossmont Cuyamaca CCD Chancellor, Dr. Omero Suarez and Cuyamaca College President, Dr. Geraldine Perri. They were wonderful hosts and were pleased that we had chosen their college for our meeting.

The CLI Scholarships were unanimously awarded to Kim Toledo of Folsom Lake College and Phil Cestone from Chaffey College. Each nominee will be acknowledged at the CLI Awards dinner with a certificate and the recipients will receive special recognition as well. They will be asked to supply us with their photos and a short bio for the newsletter, website and CLI program. I would like to offer a special thanks to Monica Souza for al the work she put into the scholarship process and the planning of CLI in general.

4CS is honored to accept a Silver Level Corporate Sponsorship for 2005-2006 and a Platinum Level Corporate Sponsorship for 2006-2007 from Sehi. Special thanks to Patrick Lane for his excellent work in securing this financial support for 4CS.

The board also passed a resolution encouraging all 4CS board members to become individual sponsors of 4CS annually. The amount contributed is up to the individual. However, we felt that it is inappropriate to ask others to support our organization if we are not members ourselves. I would like to thank those of you who have already contributed, and your support is acknowledged on the 4CS website. And I encourage those of you who have not done so to send a check to Linda Kelso, our Treasurer, along with the completed Sponsorship Form as soon as possible.

The 2006-2007 budget and the calendar of meetings for the coming year were approved.

Meeting Schedule
September 15 and 16, 2006 at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills
November 16-19, 2006 at Costa Mesa Hilton (CCLC Annual Convention
March 2 and 3, 2007 at either Southwestern or Mira Costa College
June 20-22 (I think), 2007 at Granlibakken (CLI)

In addition Board members are encouraged to attend the Legislative Conference held at the end of January in Sacramento.

After significant discussion the board agreed to award Leslie Wang of San Joaquin Delta College the 4CS Leadership Award for her contributions to classified staff and elevating the position of classified in shared governance through her tenure on the Board of Governors. The award will be presented during the CLI Awards dinner on the first night of the conference.

We discussed the upcoming issue of Connections, the 4CS Newsletter, and each board member was asked to submit an article to Tony Prestby by April 15, 2006. You do not have to write the article personally, you can solicit one from your local senate or a senate in your area (this is actually preferred as we want to see our members get really involved).

Patrick Lane, Pat Murray and Cari Plyley along with representatives from Foothill College will present a workshop on March 31, 2006 at Evergreen Valley College as part of their Classified Staff Development Day. 4CS was invited to conduct the workshop on cooperative working relationships between senates and unions by the EVC classified senate.

I will be representing 4CS at the same time at the 4C/SD Conference at Granlibakken. As part of this staff development conference I will showcase 4CS in a presentation entitled “Building Classified Leaders Through Training and Networking”. I will also accept the 4C/SD Executive Board Award on behalf of you all. 4C/SD is honoring 4CS for our dedication to the support of classified staff in governance, our support of professional development, and for our outstanding leadership development institute.

The meeting minutes will be forthcoming from Barbara Salmon. For those of you who were in attendance please read them carefully and send her any corrections right away. I ask that everyone read them thoroughly and make your own personal to do lists of things that need to get accomplished between now and CLI.

Please call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Julie Whiting, President
California Community Colleges Classified Senate
